The Story of DESIGNER
In my first Interior Design class at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, the design professor began by drawing a “D” on the dry erase board. But what did this "D" signify?
The professor unraveled its meaning—a profound revelation that "D" stands for DESIGN. It's not confined to Interior Design, Fashion Design, or Graphic Design; rather, it transcends boundaries, embracing the all-encompassing and omnipresent nature of design.
And from this idea, DESIGNER was born.

Meet the Founder
Jamel R. Williams founded To Be Designed, a full service Interior Design Firm, in September 2017 shortly after graduating from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. With years of experience collaborating with partners throughout the Design Industry, Jamel determined that his best design work has been created with a multidisciplinary process, drawing inspiration from fashion, art, graphic design, and other visual arts disciplines.
In 2023, driven by a vision for fostering a supportive and inspirational community, Jamel founded DESIGNER. This initiative brings together young designers from diverse disciplines, providing a platform for mutual support and inspiration. DESIGNER is more than a label; it's a celebration of our identity as designers with profound impact.
